Transforming post mining areas into innovative small and medium Pumped Hydroelectric Storage Systems
The 5th International Conference on Sustainable Chemical and Environmental Engineering (SUSTENG 2026), which was held in Rethymno, Greece, between 2nd to 5th September 2026 served as a premier platform for academic dialogue and knowledge exchange. Centered on critical issues and advancements in chemical and environmental engineering, the event highlighted sustainable pathways for industry growth. Participants presented cutting-edge research and explored emerging challenges, future trends, and technological innovations aligned with the core principles of the circular economy.
Within the framework of the topic Natural Resources and Energy Management, Professor Michail Galetakis gave a presentation on the HYDROMINE project objective, highlighting the importance of future energy storage by “Transforming post mining areas into innovative small and medium Pumped Hydroelectric Storage Systems”, introducing the perspective of an innovative alternative of conventional PHS installations. This objective can be achieved through comprehensive site assessment criteria, cost-effective PAT technology, and environmentally sustainable bio-based pipeline materials. This technology accelerates the rehabilitation and utilization of post-mining sites while simultaneously supporting renewable energy integration, energy storage capacity, and long-term climate and sustainability goals.
