The project will consist of 8 work packages divided into tasks.

Data collection on potential locations for the proposed energy storage technology

  • Determination of potential locations for the small PHS locations in individual countries

  • Identification of key geotechnical and infrastructural parameters

  • Development of a methodology for assessing the potential of using mines/quarries for small PHS technology

Geotechnical assessment of potential locations of energy storage technology

  • Determination of geotechnical parameters for potential locations of the small PHS

  • Development of geotechnical models

  • Numerical simulations

Development of a methodology for designing dedicated, small pumped hydro storage units

  • Analysis of technical solutions

  • Development of design and flow concepts for small pumped storage units

  • Numerical analyzes of the proposed solutions

  • Development of design assumptions for the pipeline system for small pumped storage units

  • Formulation of the design methodology for the dedicated small PHS

Design of an environmentally friendly pipeline system for small pumped storage units

  • Selection, evaluation, characterization of pipelines materials

  • Calculation, simulation and design of various pipe geometries

  • Preparation of a formulation matrix and a test plan

  • Laboratory tests of pipes

  • Optimization of the recipe and determination of an optimum pipe formulation

  • Design and production of the demonstrator pipeline

Design and construction of a small pumped hydro storage demonstrator

  • Analyses and numerical optimizations of the demonstrator

  • Detailed design of the demonstrator

  • Construction and installation of the demonstrator

Testing of a small pumped hydro storage demonstrator

  • Preliminary tests

  • Measurement data validation and system optimization

Technoeconomic – environmental assessment and develop of guidelines for applying the proposed PHS technology
