First in-person HYDROMINE meeting
On November 6, 2025, the first in-person consortium meeting took place at the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland. Following a warm welcome, the agenda included a presentation of the latest project results and a discussion on the topic. In WP1, potential sites for pumped hydroelectric storages (PHS) were presented in Poland (WUST), Germany (Fraunhofer IWU), Romania (UP), Greece (TUC), and the Czech Republic (VUHU). The participating partners also discussed

Major Breakthrough in Sustainable Pipeline Materials for HYDROMINE Project
A significant milestone has been reached in the HYDROMINE project, as researchers successfully develop and test new, environmentally friendly pipeline materials. Led by the Cluster of Excellence MERGE at TU Chemnitz, Work Package 4 (WP4) has made crucial progress in creating sustainable solutions for energy storage applications in post-mining regions. At the heart of this achievement is the successful processing of “green” polymers derived from renewable resources. The team d

Assessment of the suitability of abandoned open-cast mines for use as pumped storage power plants
Fraunhofer IWU is supporting the project partners in creating a database by identifying potential sites for small pumped hydro storage (SPHS) systems in Germany and collecting the necessary data on the size and location of possible storage reservoirs, existing infrastructure and power grid, as well as energy demand in the region and average energy prices. The objective of the data collection is to assess the potential for energy storage in SPHS systems installed in former ope
